Recent Branch Activities

Social Work Week

The Nipissing Branch hosted a pizza lunch at One Kids Place - with a presentation on the Ride Share program that is being spear-headed by the North Bay Social Planning Council - the luncheon was well-attended by social workers from across the city.

Participation on the Poverty Reduction Provincial Consultation Working Group of the Nipissing District

Ann McCarthy, OASW branch member has been representing the Branch on this local working group - this working group has been working to pull together a written submission to be made to Minister Deb Matthews. The Working Group will be sponsoring a Community Briefing on Poverty reduction next week on May 30 providing a forum for political leaders and the community-at-large to hear more about what needs to be done in order to reduce poverty in our District.

Bill 171

Four social workers (including Karen Mann and Louise Gauthier) met with our MPP Monique Smith to make her aware of our concerns regarding Bill 171. As usual, she proved to be a good listener and was proactive in following up on our concerns. She followed our visit with a letter outlining her follow-up to our visit. She is continuing to be very visible in the community educating herself about social issues.

Social Work Week

The Nipissing Branch celebrated Social Work Week this year with the banner on Main Street.

The Nipissing Branch of the OASW held its Social Work Week celebration at One Kids Place (Children's Treatment Centre) which is also the home of the School Health Support Services of the North East CCAC. The location was chosen primarily for its connectivity with the theme of Social Work Week "Making a difference in the lives of Children and Families". The presentations included child welfare issues by Cathy Craig, Manager of Client Services of the local Children's Aid Society, Jan Weidman, social worker at the North East Mental Health Centre who has extensive experience in child welfare both in Alberta and in Ontario and Ann McCarthy, from the Algonquin Child and Family Services.
