OASW Response to the Review of the Child and Family Services Act
Monday, February 22, 2010
On January 29th, OASW submitted a response to the Review of the Child and Family Services Act being undertaken by the Minister of Children and Youth Services, Laurel Broten.
We commended the government for significant improvements since the Review of the Child and Family Services Act in 2005 which include those relating to early intervention and prevention, the witnessing of family violence, alternate dispute resolution as an option and the implementation of openness agreements in regard to adoptions and openness orders prior to a child becoming a crown ward.
The Association addressed the following seven issues, together with recommendations: 1) focus of Review; 2) early intervention and prevention; 3) age of protection; 4) extension of supports for former crown wards; 5) care for children with special needs; 6) corporal punishment; and 7) child welfare services for First Nations children.
