Membership Criteria

OASW membership is open to graduates or students of Canadian university social work education programs accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE) and graduates of other university social work programs recognized as equivalent. As well, applicants must live, work or study in Ontario at the time of application. The following are qualifications recognized by OASW: 

(a) A Canadian university degree from a program that has been accredited or is a candidate for accreditation by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE) (www.caswe-acfts.ca). 

(b) A United States university qualification from a program that is accredited at the time of graduation by the Council on Social Work Education (www.cswe.org). 

(c) A qualification from outside Canada or the United States that has been evaluated as equivalent to the Canadian bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in social work by the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) (www.casw-acts.ca). 

(d) Registration as a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).* (In force until ratified at 2013 AGM on May 31).

Applicants may apply for membership in one of two categories: Professional Membership or Student Membership. 

Professional Membership  is available to those graduates of Canadian university social work education programs accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education and graduates of other university social work programs recognized as equivalent. 

Student Membership is available to students enrolled full-time or part-time in an accredited baccalaureate, master's or doctoral program in social work. Students who already hold a recognized degree in social work must apply for Professional Membership. 

Membership fees may be paid by cheque, quarterly post-dated cheques, credit card, or pre-authorized debits.

The following annual fees apply in 2013: 

Professional Membership

FT employed full-time more than 24 hours per week

 

$308.00

PT employed part-time 10-24 hours per week $195.00
NG2 new graduate 2nd year - within 24 months following graduation $195.00
NG1 new graduate 1st year - within 12 months following graduation $145.00
UN unemployed - not gainfully employed, or employed less than 10 hours per week  $99.00
RE retired - permanently retired from all employment  $99.00

Student Membership

ST student pursuing first degree in social work

 

 $99.00

GR student pursuing further degree and unemployed
(if employed, choose category related to employment status)                               
 $99.00

Current OASW members have access to special fees, e.g., fees can be waived for up to 12 months for members on parenting leave.
