As of July 1, 2026, some Ontario auto insurance accident benefits that were once standard are now optional. Comprehensive auto-insurance benefits can make the difference for a successful recovery.
While medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits remain mandatory, other benefits, including income replacement, non-earner, caregiver benefits, lost educational expenses, expenses of visitors, housekeeping, damage to personal items, death and funeral benefits, must now be added when purchasing or renewing a policy.

What you can do about it

Insurers are now responsible for educating their customers about the optional benefits, and approaches may vary between insurers and brokers. When purchasing or renewing coverage, take the time to carefully review your options. OASW encourages policyholders to speak with their insurance representative to better understand how any coverage changes may affect them and to assess whether additional benefits are needed.

Eligibility for these optional benefits has also narrowed to only include the named insurer, their spouse, dependants and other listed drivers on the policy. As a result, pedestrians, cyclists and certain passengers may no longer have access to these benefits following a motor vehicle accident.

Access to these benefits play an important role in recovery following a motor vehicle accident by alleviating the potential for financial and other hardships, particularly in in cases involving serious or catastrophic injuries.

Social workers are essential members of rehabilitation teams, providing trauma-informed mental health support, advocacy and assistance navigating Ontario’s accident benefits, health, social care, and other publicly funded systems. By helping individuals and families address the emotional, social, financial, and other practical impacts of motor vehicle accidents, social workers play a critical role in rehabilitation and recovery. Ensuring adequate accident benefits coverage remains critical for achieving the best outcomes possible.
