"Resilience & Renewal: Envisioning the Future of Social Work Practice, Research and Education"


Keynote Speaker:


Dr. Cheryl Regehr, BA, MSW, PhD, RSW, is the Vice President and Provost for the University of Toronto. Regehr's practice background includes over 20 years of direct service in forensic social work and emergency mental health and in the administration of mental health programs, specializing in civil litigation and criminal court assessments of trauma victims and violent offenders, and organizationally based trauma interventions. Her presentation "Exposure to Stress and Trauma in Social Work Practice: Contributors, Consequences, and Mitigation" examined factors that contribute to the development of distress responses in social workers as social work practice is characterized by encounters that can contribute to physiological stress, trauma response and burnout in practitioners.

Dr. Michael Ungar, PhD, RSW, has practiced for over 25 years as a social worker and marriage and family therapist with children and families in child welfare, mental health, educational and correctional settings.  Dr. Ungar's presentation "Helping Those Who Help Nurture and Maintain Resilience" explores how those that help others can avoid burnout and maintain their own career and life resilience when stressors pile up at home and on the job through seven factors.
