School Social Work


The purpose of the School Social Work Committee is to develop, promote and advocate for the practice of school social work in Ontario.
​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Its goals are:

  • To monitor proposed changes in legislation relevant to school social work and make input.
  • To advise the Board on professional practice guidelines and issues pertinent to school social work.
  • To establish and maintain communication with OASW members involved in school social work.
  • To liaise with:
    • oother OASW committees;
    • the Ministry of Education, and other relevant ministries and government bodies; and
    • other organizations in the field of education.
  • To systematically collect, organize and publish information and professional literature on school social work.
  • To inform the public about developments in school social work.
  • To deal with current policy and service issues which have an impact on the educational setting.
  • To monitor regularly and evaluate annually the accomplishments of the above goals.

Recent Activities

School Social Workers Brochure: Make a Difference - Partners in Lifelong Learning

An updated and revised version of the Committee's long-standing brochure on the services that school social workers provide to children, youth and families was produced and distributed. It is aimed for use with School Boards, school staff, school-based mental health agencies, and other community partners. It was at this time that a new logo for the OASW School Social Work Committee was launched. PDF attached below.

28th Annual Symposium -  The Voices of School Social Workers
Moving Forward on Mental Health and Well-Being: The Evolution of School Social Work  On October 28th, 2015, Dr. Kathy Short, Director of Mental Health Assist, delivered the keynote address.

8 workshops were available to choose from:


  • Girls Night In: A New Initiative at the Peel District School Board;
  • Advancing Social-Emotional Learning - Facilitating Restorative Approaches to Incidents of Harm; 
  • Homophobic Sticks and Sexist Stones: Homophobic and Sexist Name-Calling Among Middle School Students;
  • Mindfulness in Practice; 
  • Canine Assisted Intervention in Schools; 
  • Exercise to Success;
  • How Schoools can Provide a 'Secure Base' in a 'Strange Situation'; and
  • Bibliotherapy: The Use of Books to Help Children and Youth Express Their Feelings.

Annual School Social Work Achievement Award

Congratulations to Martha Brunet, recipient of the OASW School Social Work Achievement Award. It is wonderful to have her represent the outstanding work that Social Workers do. The OASW School Social Work Committee presented the award to her at "The Voices of School Social Work" Symposium on October 28, 2015.

School Social Work Newsletter 
Over the last decade, OASW's School Social Work Committee has published the OASW School Social Work Newsletter, distributed on a bi-monthly basis electronically to school social workers across Ontario and to contacts in 12 different countries, including the Committee members of the International Network for School Social Work. This publication lists and provides links to many resources geared to school social work practice including white papers, position statements and presentations.

Ministry of Education's Advisory Council on Special Education
For many years, an OASW representative has sat on the Ministry of Education's Advisory Council on Special Education, which has provided input to the Minister concerning special education policy and programs since 1977. A nomination was submitted by OASW for a new representative on the Minister of Education's Advisory Council on Special Education for a three-year period.

Annual Ministry Day
Each year, the School Social Work Committee holds its Annual Ministry Day which has senior government officials speaking on Special Education Policy and the Student Success Learning to 18 Initiative. This annual event presents an opportunity for school social workers to meet directly with senior officials in the Ministry of Education.
