Dr. Angela Hovey, Vice-President, Branch Affairs (2017-2019)
Dr. Angela Hovey, RSW, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, Lakehead University, Orillia campus, came to academia after many years of clinical social work practice with substance abuse, trauma, and violence issues in federal and provincial prisons, community agencies, and private practice settings, as well as executive management experience overseeing home care and EAP organizations. She completed both her Master of Social Work (1991) and Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work (2011) at Wilfrid Laurier University.
In her current position at Lakehead University, she is teaching general social work, human development, and skills-based interview courses, and electives pertaining to trauma, sexual violence, and substance abuse. Her current areas of research focus on restorative justice based community programs for sex offenders, harm reduction, domestic violence and policing practices, and student mental health accommodations. These research areas connect her with several community and government organizations, and interdisciplinary research teams.
Angela has been a long standing member of OASW, initially with Mid-Western Branch and currently with Huronia Highlands Branch. She was on the Huronia Highlands Branch Board from 2015 to 2017. In this capacity, she served as the Provincial Liaison for the branch and initiated stronger OASW linkages with branch members and social work students, particularly encouraging their participation at the past two OASW Provincial Conferences. She has also served as a mentor in the OASW Job Search Initiative.
Angela is strongly committed to the social work profession and OASW. She has worked with fellow members to revitalize the Huronia Highlands Branch and is keenly interested to support other branches in their efforts to create a strong local branch in her new role of Vice-President, Branch Affairs.
