Board of Directors

OASW's Board of Directors sets the association's policies and strategic directions, ensures that the organization stays on course to fulfill its mission, and advises on issues affecting the profession and the public at the provincial level.

Comprised of executive officers, directors at large, one student director and one francophone director, the OASW's board represents the perspectives, interests and needs of members at the provincial level.

Carol Soares, MSW, RSW, MPEd, EdD (c)

President

Board member since 2022 | Carol is a psychotherapist, project leader, and equity, diversity, and inclusion specialist based in Scarborough, Ontario.

Marlene Dei-Amoah, MSW, RSW

First vice-president

Board member since 2022 | Marlene is a Service Director at the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton whose career has focused on the field of child welfare.

Mariyam Zaidi, RSW, MSW

Second Vice President

Board member since 2025 | Mariyam is a registered social worker, clinician, and community leader with over a decade of experience in the mental health, nonprofit, and consulting sectors.

Dr. Christina Mills, BSW, MSW

Treasurer Secretary

Board member since 2024 | Christina currently owns and is the Director of Social Work Solutions Canada, a thriving practice that offers an array of mental health services and treatment modalities.

Shane Joseph, BSW, MSW

Director at Large

Shane is a Social Worker and psychotherapist with over twenty (20) years of wisdom in the areas of masculinity, gender-based violence, program and policy development, suicide intervention, and mental health.

Erin Whitmore, PhD, MA, MSW

Director at Large

Erin leads Edgework Counselling & Consulting where she continues to support individuals and organizations in identifying and promoting evidence-informed and possibility-rich solutions to complex and systemic social challenges.

Brad Young, MSW, RSW

Director at Large

Brad is a leader in the medical social work field, where he supports individuals and families navigating complex health challenges.

Dr. Soheila Pashang, MSW, RSW

Director at Large

Soheila is a criminology professor and suicide prevention trainer at the Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning with expertise in migration and gender-based violence.

Ann Seymour, RSW, MSW, MBA, PhD

Director at Large

Ann is currently an Associate Professor and Director of Indigenous Access at McGill University’s School of Social Work, where she develops curriculum and supports Indigenous student access and success in social work education.

Lisa Mishibinijima, MSW, RSW

Director at Large

Lisa is a Registered Social Worker with more than 20 years of experience working with diverse populations, including First Nations youth and adults across northern and remote communities.

Martha Njoku, MSW, RSW

Student Director

Martha is a PhD student at Carleton University's School of Social Work and a practicing clinical social worker.

Kelly McNaughton, RSW, MSW

Director at Large

Kelly serves as Program Manager for the Peer Support and Trauma Response Program and Organizational Lead for the Mental Health Program at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Jocelyn Hunt, MSW, RSW

Director at Large

Jocelyn is a Registered Social Worker and award-winning gerontologist with more than 20 years of experience in accessibility, aging, mental health, and health system education.

Board of Directors Committees

Finance and audit committee

Purpose

To oversee all aspects of financial planning and financial management of the Association.

Objectives

  • To develop and apply appropriate policies and procedures for the preparation of the annual budget.
  • To recommend approval of an annual budget to the Board of Directors at their last meeting before the fiscal year.
  • To recommend approval of policies and procedures for financial management to the Board of Directors.
  • To ensure that a plan for the long-range financial viability of the Association is in place.
  • To review quarterly financial statements and recommend corrective actions to the Board, as necessary.

Nominating committee

Preamble

The strength, vitality and viability of the Association are dependent upon strong volunteer leaders who are committed to the mission and goals of the organization. To ensure the ongoing relevance of the Association, succession planning must reflect the changing composition and needs of the professional community.

As a guiding principle, the Nominating Committee will focus on the integration of equity across all responsibilities and strive to identify gaps in representation based on a “vision of OASW for the future” which takes into consideration criteria which is inclusive of, but not limited to: race, ethnic origin, religion, age, (dis)ability, mental health status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, geographic location, practice sector and expertise.

Mandate

The role of the OASW Nominating Committee is to advise the Association on the development and implementation of strategies to ensure that leadership positions on the Board and Committees are filled with the most appropriate and qualified candidates. The Nominating Committee also plays an important role in recommending strategies to fill positions on Advisory Groups, Committees and Task Groups.

Governance Committee

Purpose:

The purpose of the Governance Committee is to support the Board of Directors by recommending and implementing good board governance practices. The committee works to help the board reach its full potential by strengthening its capacity for effective governance, informed by leading practices.

Objectives:

Provide recommendations to the board, including ongoing programming related to:

  • board policies and bylaws
  • board education, including onboarding and orientation
  • board succession planning
  • board committees and terms of reference
  • board evaluation
  • strategic planning
